Abstract
Current historiographical discourse on the designs and professional career of Richard Joseph Neutra (1892-1970) has been solidifying statements that express the strangeness of historians about some aspects of his work, especially regarding the architect’s relationship with Latin America. Having identified such estrangements, the purpose of this thesis is to present an analysis from a different point of view, from here to there, recognizing the impact of this relationship on his later work. For this, it is first necessary to understand the historical moment in which this relationship is inserted (the macro-history): the world political game played by the United States in order to project themselves as the dominant power. With this background panorama delimited, the focus will be adjusted to the specific case of the architect (the microhistory): the comprehension of the character (education, migration to America and early works) and his relationship with Latin America (the 1945 trip and the connections established here). From this point on, the systematic reading of the main existing bibliographies about Neutra highlights the strangeness of historians and researchers about aspects of his work whenever the relations with modern Latin American architecture were manifested. The result is the possibility of new interpretations about the architect’s legacy and the contribution to the historiographic discourse.
